There’s a story behind this event that some of you know, but many of you may not. A little more than seventeen years ago, in the year 1999, two women were beginning new jobs within a couple of months of each other. One was Kerry Robertson- she’d just been hired as the activity director for Webster at Rye, and the other was Lee Arthur- she’d just been hired as the Rye recreation director. Both women very quickly got together and shared an idea: they imagined an event that would somehow bring together both the town of Rye and the Webster at Rye communities. Kerry had been to Art in Bloom at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and envisioned a beautiful social experience right here in a nursing home that would spark a sense of community, joy and beauty. Lee envisioned an event that would draw on individuals’ creativity and imagination and bring them together in a new way. Art in Bloom at Webster at Rye was the result of those conversations. Neither of the women knew if they could pull it off- they’d never before created such an event. It would mean bringing together a lot of volunteers- artists, gardeners, creative types, shy types, outgoing types, organized types, some living or working in Rye, some at Webster at Rye, - all willing to put their abilities on display, and all taking a chance on the first-ever Art in Bloom in the year 2000. I should mention that Tom Argue, our CEO/Administrator as well as our Board of Trustee members wholly supported this brand-new idea knowing full well that a lot was riding on the successful outcome. They never doubted for a minute!
Kerry Robertson has retired from Webster at Rye, but Rye Art in Bloom continues as a collaboration between the Town of Rye Recreation Department and Webster at Rye. Plan to join us for an amazing event that will be sure to delight young and old!
